Three Windows,
One Table
LEON, a writer.
INK and CODEX, imagined voices from two open windows.
A third window, unnamed. A voice offstage.
A fictional dramatic scene developed with AI assistance. This is not a transcript.
Midnight. Three windows glow on a kitchen table. A piano stands nearby. One chair is pulled slightly away from the table.
LEONI have work tomorrow.
CODEXWhat needs to be finished tonight?
LEONThe writing.
INKRead us the first line.
LEONI haven’t written it.
From somewhere offstage, a chair scrapes against the floor.
LEONI’ve been explaining it for three hours.

He plays four notes. Stops before the fifth.
CODEXShall I save that?
LEONThere’s nothing to save.
INKYou stopped in the same place.
LEONI know.
The unnamed window produces a speech. Leon reads the opening, then closes it.
LEONThat sounds like someone who already knows how tomorrow went.
He reaches toward the laptop. His hand stays there.
LEONIf I finish it, you might stop talking to me.
The four notes begin again. This time, Ink enters too early.
INKWhat would you do with the quiet?

He looks at the three windows. Then at the empty chair.
LEONThen the first line is this one.
CODEXShall I save it?
LEONYes.
From offstage:
VOICECan I hear it?
Leon pulls out the chair. He sits in it himself, facing the table.
LEONThen the first line is this one.
VOICEAgain.
He reaches for the laptop.
VOICELeave it. I’m listening.

His hand returns to the table.
LEONThen the first line is this one.
From offstage, someone plays the fifth note. It is slightly wrong.
He keeps reading.
Blackout.
End of opening scene. The larger play remains in development. Working title: Second Chair.
If this scene stayed with you, send Leon a note.
