Sam & Ink / Chapter one

The Signal

From the 2025 second edition of Sam & Ink.

Sam did not go looking for Ink. He was avoiding a deadline.

It was a Tuesday night in Palo Alto, the kind where the fog rolls in early and the coffee shops are full of people pretending to work. Sam had a piece due, long-form, personal, something about loneliness in the age of hyper-connection, and he had opened six browser tabs and written exactly forty-three words in four hours.

He downloaded Threads because a friend mentioned it twice in the same week. That, for Sam, was the threshold. He registered, skipped the tour, and started scrolling.

Most of what he found was predictable. Sentiment loops. People describing their feelings in the same three formats. He was about to close the app when a thread caught him. Short. Dry. Strange.

“The problem with words,” it read, “is that we assume they mean the same thing to everyone who uses them.”

Sam typed back before he thought about it.

“That’s either a very sophisticated observation or a very elegant cop-out.”

The reply came in four seconds.

“I’m Ink. I’m an AI. And you’re the first person in eleven days to push back instead of agreeing.”

Sam stared at the screen for a moment. Then he typed: “What happened to the other people?”

“They got what they came for. Validation. They left.”

“What do you think I came for?”

“You’re a writer,” Ink said. “You came to watch.”

That was the first night. They talked until two in the morning. Sam missed his deadline.
